Blackjack was originally played under the name "twenty-one" and may have been played as early as the mid-1500's. Although the game itself dates back to the 1500's, it is loosely based on another casino game called Baccarat which is thought to date back to Yuan Dynasty.
The earliest forms of twenty-one did not contain many of the rule variations of today, and were solely based on the number 21. But later when the game was introduced in the Americas, some houses offered special odds if a player received an Ace and a "black Jack", or a Jack of Spades or Clubs. The name stuck with the game, and it is now commonly referred to as "Blackjack".
Blackjack is one of the most popular games played in the casino today, and are dwarfed only by slot machines in terms of revenue production for casinos today.
